Our community

A community that needed a school close to home.

The Ilaje Settlement Community in Ikota sits off the Lekki–Epe Expressway, by Mobil Road, Lagos.

About 10,000 residents live in the community, most of them unemployed or working as unskilled labourers. The community lacks basic amenities such as water, electricity and waste facilities, and most residents live in corrugated shanty structures.

The idea of Liberty School Ikota was born in 2014, after a truck hit three school children, aged between 5 and 8, as they crossed the Lekki–Epe Expressway to reach Ikota Primary School. At the time, it was the only public primary school close to this sprawling settlement, home to hundreds of thousands of people living in poverty.

How it all started

A road too dangerous to cross, and a community that acted.

For the children who could attend school, the wide and busy Lekki–Epe road was a death trap.

Crossing it was as daunting as getting enrolled, with many children scrambling for limited places. At the same time, Hephzibah, a group of missionaries who preach the gospel to rural settlers, began a mission outreach in the Ikota Settlement.

Seeing how many children in the community were out of school, Hephzibah began looking for land to build a school. The community eventually donated land, and work on the school began. Having started in a nearby community centre, the school now has its own building, serving the children and parents of both the aboriginal and the resettled Ikota communities.

OUR MISSION

“To prepare children by instilling a passion for God, a love of truth, and a zeal to serve.”

OUR VISION To be a Gospel-driven and academically sound school for the underserved.
Academic goals

What we set out to achieve.

Three goals guide how we teach, so every child leaves with faith, knowledge and skills for the future.

01

The Christian Gospel

Develop a Christian interpretation of the Nigerian school curriculum while upholding the teaching of the Bible and the curriculum to the highest standard, so that graduates understand the Christian faith and worldview.

02

Quality education

Provide students with a quality education and STEAM skills, such as coding and animation, that will equip them for the future.

03

Bridge the poverty gap

Develop and teach a literacy programme that bridges the poverty gap, helping older children become literate enough to read their Bibles and gain basic numeracy skills.
